Scholarship Program Overview

"To foster a general interest in and appreciation for
the events and people of the American Revolution."

The Board of Managers has adopted the following criteria for the establishment of a scholarship program for students seeking financial aid:

The applicant, male or female, must be a descendant of a Revolutionary Patriot or recommended by a current member of the Virginia Society of the Sons of the Revolution.  If a descendant, the applicant will be asked to give a brief summary of the ancestor’s role in the Revolutionary War.  If not a descendant, a brief summary of the important events during the Revolutionary War in his or her state of residence will be required.

There is no implication of preference or advantage if the applicant is a descendant of a member, solely a difference in the subject matter for the written paper.

The applicant shall attend or be a graduate of a public or private secondary school, or a four-year college or university.

The applicant shall have applied for admission to or be a student in a four-year college or university, or graduate school.

The applicant shall fill out a “Scholarship Application Form.”  If the Committee receives no applications in a given year for which it believes the candidates meet all criteria, the Committee shall not be obliged to recommend a scholarship in that particular year.

Applicants will be judged on a variety of criteria, no one of which is controlling, to include:

bulletClass standing and grade point average beginning with the applicant's freshman year in high school.
bulletExtra curricular activities, including athletics, clubs, societies, etc.
bulletOutside activities, including church, scouts, community service, etc.
bulletNeed is relevant to the final decision, even though the ability to substantiate the issue of need is very complex. The Board believes, however,  that the individuals evaluating the various candidates should be mindful of need. Need therefore is to be a factor, though not the determining factor. It may in certain circumstances contribute to the recommendation as to the amount of the scholarship.
bulletThe Scholarship Committee may choose to interview candidates.
bulletComplete 2011 Scholarship applications will be accepted until April 1, 2011. Applications postmarked by April 1, 2011 will also be accepted. Applications should be mailed complete to:

C. L. Sigmon
VSSR Scholarship Committee Chairman
Post Office Box 11327
Richmond, Virginia 23230-1327

Neither race nor creed, religion or nationality shall play any part in the deliberations or recommendations of the Scholarship Committee, nor in the final decision of the Executive Committee of the Board of Managers.
