Virginia Society - Recent Events

2009 Yorktown Day - October 19, 2009

The anniversary of the British surrender at Yorktown is commemorated in this annual event featuring a parade, patriotic ceremonies at the Yorktown Victory Monument, and a demonstration of military tactics by the Commander-in-Chief's Guard on the Yorktown Battlefield. Additional activities include guided walking tours of the battlefield and a wreath laying ceremony at Surrender Field, where the Siege of Yorktown formally came to an end on October 19, 1781, securing independence for the American colonies. Yorktown Day is co-sponsored by the Yorktown Day Association and the National Park Serivce, Colonial National Historical Park.
